Live in Tailem Bend and need an auto electrician? The town, home to the Coorong District Council's head office, sits where the Princes Highway meets the Dukes and Mallee highways, so trucks, caravans and long-distance travellers make up a big share of the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in Tailem Bend

Tailem Bend is a crossroads town, and much of its work comes from vehicles passing through rather than staying.

Trucks at the highway junction

Freight heading between Adelaide and Melbourne along the Dukes Highway, and grain and stock trucks coming off the Mallee Highway, all pass through Tailem Bend. A lot of these trucks run 24V systems with long trailer looms, and the connections between prime mover and trailer take a beating. Lighting faults, broken suzi coils and corroded plugs are common finds. A truck with a lighting fault may not be safe or legal to continue, so these jobs are often urgent.

Caravans heading south-east

Tailem Bend is where caravanners choose between the Coorong coast on the Princes Highway and the faster inland run on the Dukes Highway towards Victoria. Either way, the van needs working lights, a correctly set brake controller and a charging feed that actually charges. Many problems trace back to undersized cable or a tired plug. Our guide on why a caravan battery may not charge while towing covers the usual causes.

Travellers with warning lights

A warning light that comes on near Tailem Bend often belongs to someone who is a long way from home. Before heading out onto the long, open stretches of the Dukes or Mallee highways, it's sensible to know what the light means. Reading the fault codes is usually the first step. Our guide on what to do when a dashboard warning light comes on explains which lights mean stop now and which can wait.

Utes from the farms and the ferry

Farmland surrounds Tailem Bend, and the cable ferry to Jervois links the town to the dairy country on the other side of the river. Farm utes here carry UHF radios, work lights, water pumps and sometimes spray units, all wired into the vehicle's 12V system. Accessories added over the years can leave a tangle of unfused wiring under the dash. Tidying it up with a proper fuse block and relays makes the ute safer and easier to fault-find.

Race weekend traffic

The Bend Motorsport Park, about 5 km south-east of town, has hosted Supercars meetings since 2018. On event weekends, car transporters, enclosed race trailers and camping rigs arrive from across the state and interstate. Enclosed trailers often have interior lights, winches and battery systems of their own, and these get used hard over a race weekend. Check trailer lights, the plug and the winch battery before the trip, not on arrival.

Tailem Bend auto electrical questions

Do I have to slow down for tow trucks on the highway?

Yes. Since May 2025, South Australian drivers must slow to 25 km/h when passing a stationary breakdown services vehicle with flashing amber lights, such as a tow truck or roadside assistance van. The rule doesn't apply when the vehicle is on the opposite side of the road. Check the current rules on the My Licence website, as details can change.

Should I get my caravan checked before the Dukes Highway?

It's a good idea. The Dukes Highway is about 190 km of mostly single-lane highway to the Victorian border, with long gaps between towns. Check all van lights, the brake controller setting, the breakaway system and the charging feed before you leave Tailem Bend. A fault found here is much easier to fix than one found halfway to Bordertown.

Can I take my caravan on the Tailem Bend ferry?

The Tailem Bend ferry crosses the river to Jervois and runs free, 24 hours a day, unless there's a temporary closure. If you're towing a large van or trailer, check with the ferry operator or the SA Government ferry status page before you go, and drive on slowly so the drawbar and plug don't scrape on the ramp.

Local tip for Tailem Bend

If you're stopping in Tailem Bend on a long trip, use the break to walk around your rig with the lights on and the indicators going. Ask someone to stand behind while you press the brake. It takes two minutes, and the open highways out of town are not where you want to find a dead brake light or a trailer plug that has worked loose.
